Heavy metal, a style in rock music, was founded in the 1980's, when it reached its culmination: it was constantly present on television (MTV and similar), radio, in magazines... However, during the last years it lost its position. There were different reasons that caused this phenomenon - new music styles, wars all over the world (including our country, too)... Fortunately, there are still people who love this kind of music and keep it alive. One of them is D.S., although everyone knows him as MASTEMA. He is quite a good guitar player and a good composer. We talked about music, his ideas and plans for the future.
MASTEMA: Look, we live in a small town where HM is not popular very much. I mean, people don't play it so much. Hard core and punk are more successful. I've been playing with some people for 2 years... we know what we do, and we don't think about changing our style. We're called MEGATERIUM.
JUMP!: Megaterium? What's that?
MASTEMA: I really don't know. Actually, we found that name in a magazine. I think it's a kind of a mammal that lived thousands of years ago. We're still looking for a bass guitar player. And a singer. Is anybody interested?
JUMP!: Tell me, what kind of music do you prefer? Who are your favourites?
MASTEMA: Man, I hate talking about that, but if I have to... OK, I like Manowar, Halloween, Judas Priest, Merciful Fate, Testament, Kreator... Oh, I always forget someone. I also like classical and baroque music, especially Vivaldi and Bach. I learned to play keyboards by listening to them.
JUMP!: What do you think about satanic themes and images used in HM?
MASTEMA: That's stupid! They use Satan just to attract teenagers. Religion is, in my opinion, only a formality. Faith is something you have inside. I believe in truth, honour, justice, glory. That is faith for me.
JUMP!: So you don't like Black metal?
MASTEMA: No, of course not. I like it very much. Those musicians are excellent. Their music is perfect. I just don't care what they think about religion.
JUMP!: How would you describe the music you create?
MASTEMA: Well, it's mystic, melodic, emotional... The rhythm is usually fast. If you love true metal, you'll love it.
JUMP!: Have you ever played in front of the audience?
MASTEMA: We haven't had any performance, yet, but I've made a lot of songs. Some of them were recorded. We would like to play in public. We certainly will! Future is very unpredictable.
JUMP!: What do you think about the so called 'metal' groups coming from the States?
MASTEMA: They are the people who do that only to earn money. All of that has already been heard and I don't see the point. They won't last, believe me! Look what Metallica did with their last album; they created a horde of hypocritical metal heads! That ain't good for HM! That's awful! Whenever some of them start singing 'Nothing Else Matters' all I want to do at that moment is to smash his head.
